about theBythams : transport around ... : rail

Although in the dim and distant past the villages were served by a passenger rail service, that 'luxury' has long since past. Today rail travel is achieved by first travelling to either Stamford, Grantham or Peterborough railway stations.

Rail Information, including timetables and fares can be obtained by consulting the individual rail operators identified under the station sections lists below. Alternatively for national enquiries you may like to consult the National Rail Enquiries or the theTrainline websites.

Stamford

The nearest railway station to Little Bytham and Castle Bytham is located in Stamford. Stamford being a market town located five or six miles to the south of the two villages. Stamford railway station is situated on a line served by East Midlands Trains. Central Trains operate a cross country service from Birmingham in the west through to Norwich and Stanstead Airport in the east. Stations on the route include Brimingham, Nuneaton and Leicester to the west, Peterborough, Ely, Norwich, Cambridge and Stanstead Airport to the east. From Peterborough connections can be made with services travelling to London provided by National Express East Coast and First Capital Connect, and to the north provided exclusively by National Express East Coast.

Stamford station can be found in the centre of the town, near the town bridge and behind the George Hotel. Go to www.streetmap.co.uk to view a map showing the location of the station in the town.

Grantham

Alternatively to the north of the two villages Grantham railway station lies on the East Coast mainline. From Grantham National Express East Coast trains offer a service to London and the North East. East Midlands Trains also operate from Grantham and provide a cross country service from Liverpool in the north west through to Cambridge and Stanstead airport in the south east. Stations on the route include Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, and Nottingham to the north west and Peterborough, Ely, Cambridge and Stanstead airport to the south east.

Grantham station can be found close to the A1 to the west of the town centre. Go to Google Local to view a map showing the location of the station in the town.

Peterborough

If you intend to travel to London, or anywhere in the south via London, from the villages it is often easiest to travel by road to Peterborough and then use the National Express East Coast or First Capital Connect service from there.

Peterborough station can be found in the centre of the town adjacent to the Queensgate shopping centre. Go to Google Local to view a map showing the location of the station in the town.
