the church : revd jo's letter : october 2008

added 12/09/08

I seem to say a lot of thank yous through this page, and I am always grateful to the Glenside News editorial team for the opportunity to do so. This month our particular thanks go to Sharron and Tom Marriott for the wonderful music festival they put on at the end of August, and for their very generous donation to the four churches. So many people had a great time at the festival, and it was especially good to see all ages enjoying themselves together. Such events take place only through the efforts and time of those concerned, and we are extremely grateful. A special mention should go to Judy Turner, who kept everyone fed, and who worked very long hours to do so.

Sharron and Tom’s baby daughter Isabella will be baptised at Little Bytham on October 5th., and we welcome her into the church.

Congratulations go to Mandi Short and Alan Plummer of Castle Bytham, whose civil marriage was blessed at Castle Bytham on September 12th. They very generously donated their beautiful flower arrangements to the church, which gave us much pleasure.

I’m pleased to say that the Careby wedding weather ran true to form on August 2nd for our family wedding. After rain in the morning, the skies cleared and the sun shone for the rest of the day. My older son, James, in the course of his address, finally revealed the truth about an enormous fight that took place nearly 30 years ago, over the ownership of, and damage to, a Paddington Bear ruler. Apparently I scarred both him and Nick for ever by my refusal to apportion blame to right brother. I had never realised how precious a Paddington Bear ruler could be.

We have two church events this month. On Friday 3rd. the William East Quire will give a concert at Castle Bytham. They sing the music we would have heard in our churches in the early C19th. It’s very tuneful, frequently loud, and great fun – not at all ‘churchy.’ Tickets are £5 and children get in free. Do come and hear them. Your ticket entitles you to free refreshments. Then on Saturday 11th. we have our Silent Auction and Supper in the Village Hall at Castle Bytham. Immense bargains are to be had, and it’s a great opportunity to get rid of items you no longer need. All proceeds go to the church of your choice, so look out all those vases, pictures, books etc. etc. and bring them along early in the day.

The first Sunday in November is kept as the feast of All Saints, and during our 9.00 service at Little Bytham we shall remember all those who have gone before us. We tend to think that saints are those haloed people in stained glass windows, many of whom met particularly unpleasant deaths, but by saints, the church means all who have professed the faith, the ordinary people like you and me. During the service we read out the names of those we have known and loved, and to last year’s list I shall add the names of all those who have died in the last year. There is an opportunity to light a candle in their memory during the service, so please come along, even if you don’t consider yourself to be a church-goer. If you would like a name added to our list, please let me know beforehand.

With every good wish

Jo
