silent auction
friday 1 september 2006

As a result of the Quinquennial Inspection of the Church, which had identified several issues which need to be addressed over the next five years at an estimated cost of £10,000, fund raising was high on the Agenda of the June meeting of St James' Church Council.

Pat bowles floated the idea of holding a Silent Auction. Most of us had never heard of it and after Pat had briefly described the rules there was doubt expresseed as to how and even if it would work. Undeterred Pat continued to try to convince us that, despite the fact that it would involve some hard work, it had the potential to raise a substantial sum.

Pat again floated the idea at the end of the Sponsored Ride AGM, inviting the other three PCCs to bring their own lots and so raise money for their own churches. Again the reception was only lukewarm. Still Pat persevered when many would have called it a day.

And so on the evening of the 1st September, 65 people assembled in the Village Hall for the Silent Auction. They represented a complete cross-section of our communities and we were also pleased to welcome several new faces to a church fund raising event. Not only did they participate in a most enjoyable and convivial social evening, their generous giving ensured that not only was the potential to raise a substantial sum met, it was exceeeded beyond expectation. When the bell sounded to signal the end of bidding most of the numerous lots on offer had attracted bids and whent he takings were counted the massive sum, including ticket sales and donations, of £1602.30 had been raised.

This is the largest sum raised by a Church single fund raising event since the 1991 Hunter Trials.

We extend our grateful thanks and sincere congratulations to Pat for all the work she put in and for pulling it off.

Thanks also to all who provided the lots, to those who spent the afternoon in the Village Hall putting up tables and staging the lots, to those who provided our guests with a welcome drink and continued to supply generous helpings of refreshment throughout the evening and to all who helped in the kitchen preparing the supper and clearing away afterwards.

And a special thank you to all who supported us. Your generosity made the Silent Auction such an overwhelming success. And yes, people really are interested in maintaining the fabric of our churches.
