That lime is an essential ingredient in
the soil for all crops is a recognised
fact which will need no argument to
prove. It is of interest to note that lime was
used by the Ancient Britons to improve their
land, the value of this chemical being even
recognised by primitive man. Lime is an
essential plant food, and without it soild can-
not produce maximum crops.

One of the most successful agriculturalists has
stated: "If £1,000,000 were spent on lime for
treating the thousands of acres that are utterly
deficient in lime, the whole nature of the
heavy-land soil would be changed ; while
J. J. Griffiths, Esq., BSc., Lecturer in Agricul-
tural Chemistry, University College of Wales,
Aberystwyth, states in an article which
appeared in the Journal of the Ministry of
Agriculture :-

" (1) The great number of soil samples
which the writer has analysed in connec-
tion with the advisory work of the Agri-
cultural Department of the University
of Wales were, with very few excep-
tions, practically devoid of carbonates.
