Glenside News (October 2005) ...
" The sun shone, the Lancaster arrived with
its Spitfire escort and the Regia
Anglorum told us how the Battle
of Hastings was really fought. This year's Fair was without doubt
one of the best. The headline news is we should have around £3000
to donate to local charities and good causes. We have already given
some thought to those we try to contirbute to each year but are happy
to take suggestions you may have for worthy organisations or projects
around the village.
But I am getting ahead of myself. The Fair is not just the result
of the efforts of the Committee. It only works because of the help
we get from the volunteers who help set up and dismantle it and because
all of you take part in the day and hopefully bring along friends
and family from outside the village as well.
Mention of volunteers and helpers is always a difficult subject as
I am bound to forget someone if I run off a list. If I do miss you
out please accept it as a result of the ageng process on my brain
cells and rest assured your contribution is no less appreciated. Anyway
here, goes. Thanks to Trish for the outstanding Village
Hall Cafe, Paul for managing our refuse problem, Paul and Ian
and their merry band for making such a success of the Bar and BBQ
on the field, Mike and Tina and their helpers for the bunting, Rod
and his F1 drivers for the minibus service, Morris for managing the
field events and Jamie and Harry for the Duck Race. Finally, but by
no means least, our thanks to all of you who contributed to the Raffle
and Tombola prizes and a special thanks to those of you inconvenienced
by having to move your vehicles and giving up access to your homes
for the day.
I should also like to mention the support we get from our local businesses
who join in by putting in that extra bit of effort for the day. Ray
and Vicky in their shop,
Mike and Di for their beer festival and BBQ and, of course, this year
the opening of The
Castle under the management of Jonathan and Charlotte. I suspect
just about the whole of the village visited to see its new decor and
layout and, although not quite finshed in time for the Fair, I hope
you have had time to go back again now it is fully open for business.
Rather like our hopes for Fair support, it is amazing how people turned
out to help the new Guvenors(?) rebuild and decorate the Castle
and give Jon and Chaz a head start in their new business venture.
This brings me back to my plea for suggestions on what you would like
to see supported or improved around the village. We intend continuing
the improvement of the ground around the Pump and will doubtless palnt
a few more daffodil bulbs around the village, in recent years we've
planted over 70kg of bulbs. Many projects are done in cooperation
with the Parish
Council and can take some time to put into effect s the sooner
you make your wishes felt the sooner we can get on with them. The
Fair Committee is willing to put in some of the physical effort for
improvements around the village and this is another area where your
own contribution can help.
You can contact any of the Committee with ideas at any time. If we
cannot do it this year no doubt we will still be looking for projects
for next year. Meanwhile, planning for next year's Fair has already
started. Any changes you would like to see?"

Image of a Lancaster, Hurrican and Spitfire apparently, which is
the Hurrican (the one that didn't take part in the fly past at the
Fair) I have no idea :-)

The logo of Regia Anglorum,
a re-enactment society specialising in the period 1000 years ago
from the time of Alfred the Great to that of Richard the Lionheart,
who participated in the Midsummer Fair in 2005.

The Castle
Inn which reopened briefly on the day of the Fair as it neared
the end of its redecoration under the new management of Jonathan
and Charlotte.
Some of the many daffodils which have been planted in Castle Bytham
over the years by the Midsummer Fair Committee. These being around
the village sign.
