Glenside News (October 2006) ...
" As the season of berries passes by and the leaves begin to turn golden it seems strange to be thinking back to the Fair in June. As I write I have a copy of the brilliant programme for the day put together for us by Garry Jamieson and cannot help wondering if Castle Bytham Midsummer Fair programmes will become collectable items much sought after on Ebay one day! They certainly deserve to be kept for posterity and I have set about trying to find old copies around the house and garage. Part of this nostalgia is prompted by the delay in getting this article to the Glenside, for which I can only feebly plead pressure of work as the Fair Committee has to get back to its mundane day jobs.
The good news is that the Fair was our best ever for fund raising and we hope to have around £3000 available for local groups and good causes to benefit from this year. Amongst recipients will be the Church, Village Hall, Senior Citzens Christmas Dinner, local Scouts and a number of others. We also plan to use some of the money to improve the look of a few items around the village as Fair Committee projects and are discussing these with the Parish Council so more later. The main point is that we put on the Fair so that you can have a special day and hopefully we can raise a little cash for the benefit of the community at the same time.
On the subject of good causes we are blessed to have a number of people amongst us who in their own way do so much for the village in an unsung manner. Many of you may have noticed the much improved area around the Village Pump but probably do not realise that this is all the ffort of Richard Kent who has put in his time to beautify the site. The good works of John Porter in keeping verges and hedges in order and Harry Bakker who tirelessly does his bit every year, his most recent project being the renovation of most of our street signs. A work colleague of mine who lives in a similar size village near Nottingham commented the other day that he scarcely recognised his neighbours let alone joined any sort of village community life. Thank goodness Castle Bytham is nothing like that and we can both enjoy the beauty of our village and the good company of our fellow villagers. I think we have a real community spirit that is worth more than we often realise.
Finally a belated thank you to all those who helped out with the Fair, we could not do it without you and hope you were able to enjoy the day despite the sweat and toil we demanded of you. "
